Dr. Jair Shimmer

Profile

Jair Shimmer is the Personnel Director to 4 sites. Their most defining attribute is their talent and willingness to study and decode cursed objects for the Foundation. He makes it a point to wear as many cursed little trinkets and jewelry as he can. While during work, Shimmer is at his utmost professional; once he's off the clock, or someone else nags him to be off the clock (Alto Clef), she drops all pretenses of the former and is a general menace among staff, unless you are coming to place bets. Also, he's Jewish.

Appearance

As Shimmer is a part of SCP-963, they don’t have a fixed look. However a consistent key feature is that she will dye the hair of the host orange, to resemble the hair he had in his original body. Because of this, the hair on these bodies often gets dry and brittle, ruining it forever. However, if you get a new body every month at least once, this seems like a fair trade to Jair.

He will wear a menagerie of jewelry on his person: usually three small earrings on the ears, a chain from his left nostril to his left ear, and various rings on his fingers. Depending on the body he's in and the permissions that would be given to her, they might have more jewelry on them as well. Sometimes they may slip out of containment to go to a piecing shop, regardless of the consequences they'll have when they get back.

First Body

Shimmer's first body had brown skin, ginger hair, and freckles, as do most of his family. He was 5'7" feet tall, on the skinny side of average, with tattoo armsleeves of magic sigils that he gained in Deer College.

With this body thrown into the corpse incinerator, the only memories they have left are found in the old outdated photos his family took. Most, if not all, are lost at this point. In Tamlin house, there is a high resolution painting of Jair’s first body.

#376 Body

The most recognizable body Jair has been in. This was one of Jair's longest living bodies, second only to their original form. She was 6'4", white, with black hair, although her hair was dyed orange (including her beard). This body was the start of Shimmer wearing turtlenecks around the site. He began to use the high neck of the shirt as a barrier to wrap SCP-963 around his neck and wear it like a choker.

After some close calls where he almost died in this form, the extra body was sent over to Site-53. With Jair getting a new body after this, he doesn't know much about what happened to this one, although he's sure it’s still somewhere at that site.

Background

Shimmer spent the first part of his childhood in rural ████████████, New York. Jair and his siblings would be left alone for long periods of time, as their parents left to work at the Foundation. At first they were often left with babysitters, but over time it became easier and safer for the siblings to simply take care of each other, as their anomalous attributes began to show up at that age. Because of this, Jair was primarily raised by their siblings Marwood and Clarie, before they became old enough to take care of their younger siblings, T.Y. and Renata. However, there were very few resources for the older siblings, and so after countless calls to CPS that found the kids under-bathed, in dirty clothing, and with little food in terms of lunch, with their parents nowhere to be found, all of the children were brought under Foundation care.

Shimmer attended Deer College to get a degree. She majored in Curses and minored in Magic; she was given amnestics until she successfully finished her degree. While in college, they joined a GoI known as the America's Moonshine Breweries, a group known for selling mom-and-pop shop style anomalous alcohols. Jair took a great interest in the brewing process. However, once he returned to the Foundation, he gave up a great deal of information regarding the AMB in order to prove his loyalty. Despite this, Jair kept the equipment and still has contacts in the group.

Relationships

Shimmer has a lot of connections inside and outside the Foundation thanks to his prolific and well-known family.

Family

The Shimmer family is an incomprehensibly large group of people. Shimmer’s parents are Adamah Shimmer and Chava Shimmer. Their siblings are an older brother named Marwood, an older sister named Clarie, a ounger brother named T.Y., and a younger sister named Renata. Jair also has an estranged son, Nell Cameron, and a grandson, Yoric. The rest of their family is not as well known to them.

Partners

Depending on the reality, Shimmer is dating Alto Clef, Simon Glass, and/or Benjamin Kondraki — sometimes all three at once.

Work

Jair Shimmer’s main line of work in the Foundation was as the Personnel Director and Head of Magic Curses, working with the study of artifacts. He takes such great pride in his specialized knowledge that he often flaunts and displays cursed items on his body and throughout his office(s.)

He used to be cautious around cursed objects, but after the 963 incident, he started to become reckless, knowing that he'd always come back after the Foundation found him. While this recklessness helped quicken the study of new SCPs, it also slowly became more and more dangerous as the Foundation cannot always predict what happens when certain curses interact with other curses.

He does facilitate a betting ring for literally anything; you could put a bet on if the staff kitchen will be destroyed in the next breach or not. It’s organized to a tee: money slipped into envelopes, packed into alphabetized folder, dated and timed in cabinets, with a notebook to keep track of exact placement of anything. Shimmer likes to see the personnel fight when bets don't go their way.

After a month of Shimmer inhabiting a form, SCP-963 will be moved to a new body. The Foundation uses that to their benefit, sending off any excess bodies to other sites and projects that require a higher clearance level to do.

Being the Personnel Director, he has access to almost everything about the workers on the site, with the exception of a few things. While he doesn't use this information to throw someone under the bus, he will often divulge information to his friends and other Level 4 doctors on the site. She will also use this information to her advantage, since he is able to procure friendships faster then average by remembering birthdays and gleaning knowledge about people's interests.

SCP-963

The amulet is made out of silver, red beryl/bixbite, and multicolored sapphires. It was dound in the abandoned shack of a Type Blue, with the creator's corpse not far behind. The Foundation carefully wrapped the amulet up and took it back to be studied and contained. Because of its perceived danger, the study landed on Jair Shimmer to do, given their high rank and knowledge on the subject. After doing some simple tests, he was able to measure a large amount of magic running through the amulet, but it did not seem to have any effect. Shimmer wrongfully concluded that the magic was the simple result of a miscasted spell, and picked it up to return it to storage, but the moment she touched the artifact it immediately attached itself to her.

Shimmer had yet to know about what had happened to him. All the amulet needed was an initial soul, trapped and contorted to become a containment area for more souls, and it had gotten this from the reality bender who had died back in the shack. The spell was set, meaning that the next person to pick it up would become the host, and the personality associated with the amulet. The Type Blue over looked this and took their own life instead. Since Shimmer was the the next person to touch it, he had immediately become the host.

He was unaware of SCP-963's abilities at first. However, an informant from another GoI, in disguise within the Foundation, backstabbed him when he began to realize their true reason for being a Foundation employee. This activated the amulet's primary effect.

Inside of the amulet is a location where the souls go; it is a decrepit, bleak, and miserable place, described as a great void or even a Limbo created by its magical properties. It is described as a hell of black skies and black water of unknown depth. The corpses of everyone whose bodies have been used to host Shimmer are floating in the dark water, visible whenever Jair gets forced back into this place. There are no lights, but she can still see as far as he wants, since it is not a physical location. If Shimmer gets a new body but still has a connection to their previous form, both bodies would seem to synchronize their movements within the amulet.

Shimmer can take off the amulet before the end of the month and still retain his body. If the amulet is placed on another person before the end of the month, then it switches bodies, giving him a new form.

The souls inside of SCP-963 can be retrieved by Jair. The soul can be found within the amulet, and asked questions through the host body. However, it is very difficult, since it is similar to full possession, and Shimmer needs to do it all herself. Often, she refuses, since it's so taxing for her.
